Tudor Primary School in Hemel Hempstead had plans for a transformative play area to be built on a large mound in their grounds, to cater for their growing school and offer a space for children of all ages to play and explore. Being in a prominent position in their grounds and in the town, we knew that they would want something large and impressive that would inspire the whole school to get outdoors and play.
We proposed Tudor Towers, an enormous climbing frame stretching 18 metres in length to occupy the entire top of the mound. The idea behind this design is that it would stretch farther than the eye can see, encouraging their pupils to start exploring each corner of the climber to help improve their health and fitness through play
The central section features 3 towers at 1.2m and the main tower at 1.5m, offering exciting views over the whole school and the town of Hemel Hempstead too. Suspended steps link the towers to one section of free-form play, whilst the trapeze hoops are ideal for older pupils and direct them to the more challenging section.
As with all of our designs, Tudor Towers is packed with activities that are ideal for promoting physical strength through play, with climbing ropes and walls to help with grip-and-grasp, to monkey rungs to assist with upper body strength, and balancing activities to challenge balance, coordination and core strength.
As part of the brief Tudor Primary asked for an all-weather pathway down the side of the mound, to link their nursery directly to the play area without needing to walk the long way around.
Tudor Towers is a fantastic example of the bespoke school play area designs that Setter Play create
A couple of adventure trail items complement the space and create even more room to play, beside their existing tyre park
Tudor Primary are thrilled with their climber, with children shouting ‘this is the best thing ever’ and ‘thank you Mr. Weightman!’ as we had a walk around to sign the project off. We’re hugely proud to have worked with another local school to deliver something special, and this is definitely another job well done.
